6th Grade Scoliosis Screening

All 6th grade students will be screened for Scoliosis during their PE classes on Wednesday, February 27th.  Students who do not have PE will be pulled during advisory.

Student IDs Required

KISD junior high students are required to wear their ID badges at all times while on campus.  Some of our students have gotten into the habit of leaving them at home or in their locker.  Others have lost them all together.  Students are required to have their ID bage to go through the lunch line and to check our library books.  Please talk with your child about this and help us to be in compliance.  New ID badges are available in the library for a $3 fee.  Thanks for your support.

Car Rider Line Etiquiete

Thank you for following our car rider guidelines.  We are setting a wonderful example for our children when we model for them by following procedures, especially when safety is involved.  I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that the outside lane closest to Katy-Gaston Rd. should always be double stacked.  When cars reach the coned area that feeds into a single line, it is imperative that drivers courteously take turns with one car from each lane filing into single file.  Your child is in the car watching and learning from your actions.  Thank you for setting the right example.

Honorary Texas Life Membership Award Nominations

SLJH PTA Nominating Committee

SLJH Parents,

It is time for our PTA to begin the process of electing our board members.  The first step in the process is to put together a nominating committee.  This Friday, February 22nd, we will host a General Membership PTA meeting in our school cafeteria.  The purpose of the meeting is to elect 5 members and 2 alternates to serve on the nominating committee.  The role of the nominating committee is to nominate eligible persons for each office of the PTA Board and to report its nominees to the General Membership at the ellection meeting, which will take place on March 28th.

We already have volunteers who have put their name in the hat to be considered to serve on the nominating committee.  Anyone who is a member of our PTA is eligible to be considered for serving on the nominating committee.  If you are interested in being considered, please come to the PTA General Membership meeting on Friday and let us know.

All members who put their name forward for consideration will be placed on a ballot.  Elections shall be by plurality.  Once the 5 members and 2 alternates are elected by the General Membership, the newly elected nominating committee members will elect a chair person and their work will begin.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Have a terrific weekend.

Spring Test Results

As you know, your child participated in the 2012 spring administration of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) which replaced the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR assesses student

performance based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) learning

objectives that were developed by the Texas Education Agency.

In May 2012, parents received only Raw Score information which indicated the number of correct items on each assessment. TEA did not set performance standards until January 2013, so you are now receiving your child’s Confidential Student Report (CSR) reflecting your child’s performance from the May 2012 STAAR assessments. To assist you in understanding the enclosed 2012 STAAR test results for your child, a brochure is included that provides a summary of the STAAR program, explains the Confidential Student Report (CSR), and gives a brief summary of the performance levels for STAAR.

These scores hold no value towards your child’s 2012-2013 state testing results. If your child’s test scores differ from previous TAKS test results, please remember that the STAAR assessments are new and more rigorous than past TAKS assessments. Students who participate in the 2013 spring administration of STAAR will receive a new Confidential Student Report in late May/early June 2013. The 2013 spring administration of STAAR will be the first set of test results that will count towards your child’s state testing performance. You are urged to contact your child’s teacher to find out specific areas in which your child would benefit from extra support and practice. Questions concerning the STAAR assessment program may be addressed by your child’s school counselor. For farther information about the STAAR assessment program, please visit the TEA website at www.tea.state.tx.us.

Last Year’s STAAR Test Results Coming Home Wednesday!

Updated STAAR Test Results from the Spring 2012 test administration will come home with your student on Wednesday, February 13, 2013.  Your child should bring home their test results and a brochure explaining the results.  Please review the attached letter for more information about these results.  Thank you!

Student IDs

KISD requires secondary students to wear their ID Badge at all times while in our building.  This serves to identify them in an emergency situation, to keep our building secure, and to allow us to quickly get them through the lunch line.  We serve 430 students lunch in half an hour.  Being able to scan their ID to ring them up is essential to getting them all served in a timely manner.  Many of our students have lost their IDs.  We are requiring them to wait until all students with IDs have gone through the line before they are served.  Please help us avoid this situation by encouraging your child to obtain a new ID in the libary for $3.

STAAR Tutorials

We have recently administered a practice STAAR test to all students.  Our results indicate that many of our students are in need of before school and/or after school tutorials.  If you child is one of those students, you will very soon be receiving a letter requesting that your child attend tutorials.  Please make the necessary adjustments to your schedule to allow us to provide this additional support for your chid.  Our goal is to equip them to do their very best on this rigorous assessment.  We appreciate your support.

SLJH Parent Surveys

Our first semester is behind us and we feel great about what we have accomplished.  We strive to live by the Spartan Creed and provide our students and families with first class service.  In an effort to better serve you, we are requesting that you take a few minutes to fill out a survey.  There are two surveys, the Parent School Climate Survey and the Teacher Specific Parent Survey.  You may choose to do one, both, or neither.  The Teacher Specific Survey allows you to choose any or all of your child’s teachers to give feedback to.

We will also be inviting our students to complete both a school wide survey and a teacher specific survey.  The results of these surveys will be used for improvement planning by our staff and our Campus Advisory Team.  We hope you will thoughtfully consider your comments and use this as a vehicle to improve our school for all students.  While your input will remain annonymous, we hope that you will be kind and constructive in your comments.  The Spartan Creed calls for integrity and respect.  As we strive to grow, we must ensure that everyone’s dignity remains intact.

The surveys will be open until noon on Friday, February 8th.  Thank you in advance for taking the time to let us hear your voice.

This course, based on the Texas Performance Standards Project for gifted/talented students, offers a nontraditional learning experience to students who have the ability to create innovative products or performances.  Students will develop a product proposal, compile a portfolio, conduct in-depth research, work with a mentor from the business or professional community and prepare for public presentation of their product or performance at the end of the school year to be evaluated by an audience that includes experts in the field.  Students work with a mentor to create a product related to their topic; the product is required to have real-world application and tangible documentation.

The course is offered outside of regular school hours online through MCTC.  Students will not physically attend MCTC.

If interested, please pick up an application in the counselor’s office.  Students will need to apply and be accepted to Miller Career Center to be eligible to take the course.  Applications are due by February 14, 2013.
