Spartan Buddies

SpartanSpartan

Several Spartans took part in the end of the year celebration for our Spartan Buddies Club.  This club meets throughout the school year to facilitate friendships between our general ed and special ed students.  All of these students took a field trip to Main Event to kick off summer.  A fun time was had by all!  You can count on Spartans to be inclusive and take care of their fellow students.

Exam Schedule

Thank you for paying particular attention to our exam schedule listed below.  The full schedule is posted on our website.  Please contact Dr. Medrano directly if your child is absent during a scheduled exam and needs to make arrangements for a make up.

Awards Ceremonies

Please note the specified time for your child’s grade level award ceremony.  We have lots to celebrate at SLJH and will do our very best to run right on schedule.  You can help by doing the following:  1) Park behind the school in our faculty parking lot and proceed directly to the library (This will allow us to bypass issuing every person a visitor’s badge.) 2) Please stay in the library until we are ready to usher you into the cafeteria for the award’s ceremony.  3) Once your child’s ceremony is finished, please exit out the back doors of the cafeteria directly to the rear parking area so that the next group of parents can enter via the main hallway.  Please leave your child at school for the full half day schedule.  (This will prevent a long line of parents waiting to check out their child in the front office.)  4) If you do need to check your child out early from school, please follow the appropriate procedures and check them out officially in the main office.

The awards ceremonies are an important milestone for you and your middle school child.  We look forward to seeing you here!  There will be plenty of opportunities for photos in the courtyard area.

Course Verification Sheets

SLJH is still missing quite a few course verification sheets that help determine classes for next year.  Be sure they are turned in to your 2nd period teacher no later than Friday.  Only if a reprint is needed stop by the Counseling Office for another copy. Some may be in backpacks so please look. Remember these only verify what was input into the computer at the time of course selection and are not guaranteed schedules for next year. They are an opportunity to make changes to what was input originally. Forms will not be taken past 3pm on Friday, May 23, 2014. After Friday, what is in the computer will stand.

SLJH Volunteer of the Year

2013-2014

Amy Wagner

Amy Wagner was honored today at the KISD VIPS Breakfast for being elected as the SLJH Volunteer of the Year for 2013-2014.  We are very grateful for the countless hours she has lavished on coordinating special treats and events, not only for our staff, but for the staff at our sister school, McDonald JH, and Raines HS.  Thank you Amy!

Kudos to Our Yearbook Staff!

The 2013-2014 yearbook staff won the National Excellence Award for the SECOND year in a row! Once again, the SLJH yearbook is the only yearbook in Katy ISD to win this prestigious award!
Congratulations to the yearbook staff and yearbook adviser Katie Frazier!

SLJH Choir Pop Show

Please come join us tonight in the SLJH Cafe for this year’s Pop Show!  This is a show you will not want to miss.  Our kids will rock your socks off.  Not only will they be signing some of my very favorite oldies but goodies, but they are dancing too!  Its a FREE show!  Come on over and enjoy it.  7:00 PM!

Locker Cleanout Schedule

Tuesday, May 27th, 8th Grade during advisory, girls first 20 minutes, boys last 20 minutes

Wednesday, May 28th, 7th Grade during advisory, girls first 20 minutes, boys last 20 minutes

Thursday, May 29th, 6th Grade during advisory, girls first 20 minutes, boys last 20 minutes

Please talk with your child about what MUST come home as a result of the locker cleanout.  Many students throw many items in the trash.  If you want something to come home, speak now.

CHANGE!!!

Arrival Procedures

Next year, in an effort to comfortably and safely accommodate over 1800 students, we will be changing our Arrival Procedures.  When the doors open at 7:10, all students will report directly to their 1st period class.  Every student will be expected to have a book with them.  The entire campus will participate in Drop Everything and Read.  Students will not be allowed to roam the halls.  They must report directly to class and request a pass if they need to go anywhere.  Students with instruments and/or athletic bags will be allowed to drop off their stuff prior to reporting to class.  We will begin practicing these procedures on Tuesday, May 20th in an effort to work out kinks.  Thank you in advance for helping us to make this a success!

Locker Assignments

Because we will have over 1800 kids and only have 1400 lockers, we will NOT be assigning a locker to 7th and 8th grade students next year.  7th & 8th graders may request a locker if they have a medical or other pressing need.  There is a link on our website that you can use to request a locker.  All 6th graders will be assigned a locker.

If you have a 6th grade student, please take care of their immunizations now.  All incomming 7th graders have to have specific immunizations before they will receive their schedule in August.  Don’t wait until the last minute and be scrambling to get it done.  Get those shots now and turn in the paperwork to the clinic.  Thanks you!

Exam Schedule

Please review our exam schedule and make sure your child is in attendance when they are taking final exams.  Once teachers are gone, there is no way to correct a failing report card grade or an incomplete until August.  Students will not be allowed to take exams early.  Please contact Dr. Medrano directly if this will be a problem for you.

Please review our awards ceremony schedule and make plans to attend!  Please plan to park in the faculty parking lot in the rear of the building and enter the library.  You will not need to sign in as long as you stay in the library until escorted to the cafeteria.  We look forward to seeing you there.

SLJH Awards Ceremonies 2014

Please take a moment to carefully review our modified schedule for Thursday, June 5th.  This is an early release day and the last day of school.  We hope you will be able to join us as we celebrate the hard work our children have accomplished this school year by coming to our awards ceremonies.  As you arrive, please park in the rear faculty parking lot and enter through the rotunda doors to the library.  Once we are ready for you, we will invite you to the cafeteria for the ceremony.  Since we will not be signing you in through the main office, you may not go to any other part of the building except the library and the cafeteria.  As you exit the ceremony, please exit via the back doors that feed into our courtyard.  This will allow the next group of parents and visitors to enter the cafeteria through the main hallway.  I hope you will consider leaving your child at school with us until 11:35 and not electing to check them out early.  We have almost 1600 kids and it will become stressful and frustrating for us all if every family wants to sign their child out to take them home early.  Thank you in advance for joining us and for following these simple guidelines.

technology

We are looking for tech savvy students to provide teachers with classroom app training on Monday, August 18 from 8:00 – 11:30 AM. Six students will be chosen to develop a short presentation on an educationally useful technology app of their choice. Students must agree to spend time this month during advisories to develop an interactive walk-through of their chosen application as well as a short activity for teachers to complete. Students may choose from a list of apps or may propose a new app, subject to approval. The app should be available on either PC browser (without installation) or iPad (free app version), and should have an educational purpose. Parents will be contacted to verify the student will be able to participate on August 18.  Please direct any questions to the SLJH Instructional Coaches at 281.234.2197, or sharynkitto@katyisd.org, kristinabertrand@katyisd.org, or melissamgonzalez@katyisd.org. We look forward to working with your kids!  This is their chance to teach teachers how to make learning more fun using technology!

If you think your child will benefit from sharing their skills with SLJH teachers, please contact us ASAP and we will sign them up!  All students who participate will be treated to a pizza lunch with Dr. Medrano and will receive 5 patio passes.

SLJH Spring Exam Schedule 2014

SLJH Spring

Exam Schedule 2014

Please take a moment to review our Spring Semester Exam Schedule.  It is imperative that ALL of our students are present to take their exams.  Because it is the end of the school year, teachers will not be available to give make ups and change grades.  If a child is ill or there is an  unexpected family emergency, please contact me directly to make other arrangements.  Otherwise, students will have to come back after June 16th to make up their exams. If a student misses an exam, he/she will receive an “I” on their report card.  That incomplete will remain on their report card until teachers are back on contract and can complete a change of grade form in August.    Students will not be allowed to take exams early.  Please do everything you can to ensure your child is present for all scheduled exams.
